AAHS Art Students Honored at Scholastics

Three AAHS students attended the celebration of Scholastic Art Award winners at the Clemens Center in Elmira.  After the award ceremony, student artists and their parents and teachers were permitted to see a special exhibit of student artwork and tour the Arnot Art Museum.

Artist of the Week: Lexi Morley


My Artistic Journey
I never really used to draw much or anything. I only took art because I needed another credit and my friend Sarah wanted me to take it with her. I used to doodle in my notebooks when I was bored, but I never actually tried. I have grown to enjoy art and I’ve learned how to be a better artist.
When most people hear the word artist they think of someone famous like Georgia O’Keefe; however, you don’t have to be famous or sell your artwork to be an artist. An artist can be absolutely anyone. You don’t necessarily have to sit down and paint a painting to be an artist, you can do something as simple as just taking a picture or even do just a little doodle here and there expressing yourself. You can express your opinions, emotions, thoughts, personality, anything. To me, an artist is anyone that expresses themselves.

This year in Art 1 we made something called an artist journal. We used this journal frequently throughout the year to doodle and express ourselves. I loved this, it was my favorite way to express myself. I could just walk into class and draw whatever I was feeling in that moment, it didn’t matter what it was. An artistic journal is basically just a journal where you try new techniques and express yourself. I remember I tried this one technique where you paint a little layer, cut out a picture from something and put it on the paint, and then you paint over the picture. The paint will act like glue and keep that picture there; however, I used too dark of a color so you really can’t even see the picture, but that’s what this journal is all about. Make mistakes, try new techniques.
Before I took Art 1, I used to think a photograph was just a photograph. Over this course I have grown to see them more and more as a work of art. To take good photographs you have to use a lot of different compositions; for example, the lighting has to be just right, they say natural light is the best. Also you should never make your main focus right in the middle of the picture, put it off to the sides or in corners. Never center it. By using the rule of thirds for this, your main focus will be more interesting. By learning these compositions they’ve helped me take much better photographs and I will never forget these compositions.

I express myself by drawing things that I like or that I’m feeling, there are so many ways to express your personal identity in art. You can paint things that you’re interested in. You can draw the emotions you’re feeling. You can even use objects from your family’s history and put it into your art project, it’s part of you. I tend to use my favorite colors and draw my favorite animals. Expressing yourself is easy in art, don’t be scared to be yourself.
We did this project recently that was called linoleum block printmaking, an old fashioned printing technique. Quite honestly, I thought this was going to be stupid and not even turn out good, but I was wrong. This project was so much fun and it turned out great. The one great benefit you get from doing this old fashioned printing instead of digital prints is that you can make it original. It’s not just something you did real quick on the computer and printed out. It takes a lot of hard work. By the end, it’s meaningful to you; whereas with the digital print you’re proud but not really connected to it in a certain way. With the old fashioned technique you put a lot of time and effort into it. 


Art 1 was definitely an experience for me. I have had so much fun and have made so many new friends along the way. I’ve learned a ton of new techniques that I’ll carry with me throughout the rest of my life. You learn many, many things, but the one major thing I’ve learned is that you can’t be scared to try new things. You have to take a risk and explore, kind of like life. Art is all about being creative, trying new things, and expressing yourself.

Athens Art in the News!

Today we had a visit from the WETM Channel 18 newsteam. They will be doing a story about our Souper-Bowl event as part of their "How Cool is Your School" segment.  Newscaster Samantha Lantz is an Athens alumni!

Science Meets Art

STEM Science classes are learning about sound waves.  Art classes are learning about how art can be both functional and decorative.  Sometimes science and art overlap!  In this picture, science classes joined an art class co-taught by Mr. McNeil and Dr. Wales.  Mr. McNeil taught the science behind how sound waves work to create a functional whistle and Dr. Wales taught how to use the clay techniques to make a functional whistle.

Artist of the Week: Sierra Campbell

I like to make projects in Ceramics and give them to my family.  I have created projects through using molds, throwing on the wheel, making coil pots and making slab pots. My favorite is throwing pots on the wheel. At first it was really hard, but it got easier the more I practiced.  It makes me really happy to be Artist of the Week.

Athens Students to receive Scholastics Art Awards

Part of being an artist is presenting our art to the world.  It takes a lot of bravery to go beyond exhibiting, but competing with other artists.  Several students from Athens High recently submitted artwork, representing our school in a regional contest among many schools in Pennsylvania and New York.  

This year AAHS had three student artists who won awards:
  • Tiegan Stetz, Silver Key Award for Printmaking
  • Breanna Forrest, Honorable Mention for Drawing 
  • McKaylah Dekay, Honorable Mention for Drawing

These three students are invited to the Gala Awards Presentation on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at noon at the Clemens Center in Elmira, NY. This special event honors all the students, teachers, and schools and publicly recognizes the young artists of our region.  Immediately following the ceremony is a reception and grand opening of the show of winning artworks at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira. The show will be on view throughout the month of February. The entire Museum will be open to guests of the Scholastic Art Awards until 3 pm.

The Scholastic Art Award Competition is a regional competition that judges student artwork from all schools in the Twin Tiers of Pennsylvania and New York. From 808 pieces submitted, they accepted 226. The pieces that are chosen will be in an exhibit at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, NY. Museum director Rick Pirozzolo describes this program as “the state championship” for young artists. 

It is very steep competition, and it is prestigious to be recognized. However, we would like to stress to our students who represented our school that it is an honor to be chosen to compete. Out of the hundreds of drawings, these are the drawings that measured up to the high standards of technical accomplishment, originality, composition, and the emergence of a personal artistic vision. The students who competed from Athens this year include:
Sydney Liechty, Lauren Galasso, McKaylah DeKay, Breanna Forrest, Adam Hunsinger, Erica Hutchison, Tiegan Stetz, Abigail Cuno, Rachel Hutchison, Hayleigh Macik, Donna Cardona, Ariana Gambrell, Raegen Millar, Jeffrey Reagan and Amanda Sampson.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Each year, increasing numbers of teens participate in the program, and become a part of our community—young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets and sculptors, video game artists and science fiction writers, along with countless educators who support and encourage the creative process.

Young artists in grades 7 through 12, from public, private, or home schools, can apply in 14 categories of art, ranging from drawing and painting to fashion and jewelry, for their chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited at the Museum. Submissions are juried by notable professionals in the community involved in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision
Many well-known artists and creative people received their first recognition in the Scholastic program, including Andy Warhol, film-maker Ken Burns, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, Lena Dunham, Stephen King and John Lithgow.  Who knows what the future holds for these creative students from Athens?

Artist of the Week: Tiegan Stetz

I like to make art because it shows my creativity and expresses myself. I painted this picture with acrylic paint and used a few techniques. I took the original photograph while I was traveling in New York, crossing a railroad. This project turned out to be better than I had expected. It was a little hard to find the right colors, but I finally did find the right ones.

I took this picture, sketched it, and painted it with water color. Along the way, I struggled trying to get the right shades of green. I learned that you should only do one spot at a time and that you need to make your focal points standout.

I used words that describe my life. I also used many quotes and I actually wrote the lyrics to some of my favorite songs. I used my own way of using these words in my selfie. I traced myself from a picture and then with my pencil I used the words for all the different shades. I think it came out good. It came out better than I thought it would.
